Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
