European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
